October 24, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us to celebrate the 133rd anniversary of Sir Henry Parkes historical Tenterfield oration streaming at Tenterfield cinema from Museum of Australian Democracy, Canberra.
Orator, Emeritus Professor Judith Brett of La Trobe University, Melbourne.
Topic: How good are Australian elections?
Driven by radical young colonists like Henry Parkes, the Australian colonies were pioneers of democratic elections, adopting manhood suffrage and the secret ballot and establishing non-partisan electoral administrations.
Australia’s tradition of majoritarian democracy continued into the twentieth century, with votes for women, and preferential and compulsory voting.
In the 2022 Parkes Oration in Canberra on Monday October 24 2022 Professor Brett will outline the history of these achievements and consider some arguments for improvement.
